FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAAME, Inc. Presents Inaugural Black Maternal Health Walk, Run, and Stroll Event

Durham, NC, March 7, 2024Families in Durham and surrounding areas are gearing up for a momentous occasion as MAAME, Inc. announces its first-ever Black Maternal Health Walk, Run, and Stroll event. Scheduled for Saturday, April 13, participants will gather at The W.G. Pearson Center from 10 am to 2 pm to advocate for improved health outcomes for Black mothers in the local community.

Founder of MAAME, Inc. Maya Jackson, expressed her vision for a better Durham, stating, “I wanted to create a space that ensured that the whole family and community could support and create more awareness around Black maternal health together.” The walk is not only an opportunity for seasoned runners but also for individuals looking to show solidarity and commitment to addressing disparities in maternal health, particularly affecting Black communities.

Recent studies have shed light on the challenges faced by expectant parents, with nurses only able to allocate a fraction of their time to providing emotional support during labor. MAAME, Inc. aims to bridge this gap by training community-based doulas to offer life-saving support, resulting in quantifiable improvements in birth outcomes from conception to postpartum.

Participants and teams are encouraged to join the event to raise awareness and funds to support initiatives enhancing maternal health outcomes for Black, Brown, and historically underserved parents in North Carolina. A team fundraising competition is underway, with a target of $50,000 set to aid families in need and bolster better maternal health outcomes.

Teams registering for the event will have the opportunity to compete in the fundraising competition, with the top-performing team receiving an exclusive feature in the MAAME, Inc. newsletter, reaching hundreds of North Carolina families every month.

Registration for MAAME, Inc.’s Black Maternal Health Walk, Run, and Stroll event is now open. Interested participants can sign up at https://maameinc.org/walk-4-maame/ or visit https://givebutter.com/Walk4MAAME. Individual and team registrations are available, with any inquiries directed to Larisha Stone at larisha@maameinc.org.

Join us on Saturday, April 13, as we walk, run, and stroll towards a future where every mother receives the support and care she deserves.
