Meet Alexis Bailey

Blog,Internship

My name is Alexis Bailey. I am currently a senior, Public Health Education student at North Carolina Central University with a passion for Maternal and Child health nutrition.

I always knew that I wanted a career based on helping people. Growing up, I was surrounded by my younger siblings, cousins, and even the neighborhood children. I was everyone’s babysitter, watching children grow up before my eyes. I became fascinated with how they can go from tiny beings that eat and sleep all day to watching them develop into maturity.

Nutrition is another thing that is very important to me. Due to diabetes and high blood pressure running in generations on my maternal side of my family, I take nutrition very seriously, especially when it comes to my diet.

With my love for children and my passion for nutrition, I have thought about my career goals post-graduation. I am interested in working in Maternal and Child Health by spreading awareness to current future mothers about how important it is to eat healthily, breastfeed, and partake in self-care, especially to minority groups such as African American women. I have even considered learning more about Doula’s work with my time spent at MAAME, Inc., and I aspire to work in the Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) Department one day.

I learned about MAAME from an intern from this prior year, and she had nothing but positive things to say about the organization. I love that this is a group of black women working to fight health disparities in our community. Working with accomplished women who look like me inspires me to keep going towards my goals. Black Maternal and Child Health are underrepresented, and we need more people to come and fight for us.
