Overview Community Doula Program at Atrium Health

This is a unique opportunity to work in partnership with Atrium Health Center while being employed by MAAME, Inc., a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to improving child and maternal health through community-based initiatives. The selected candidate will work onsite at Atrium Health Center, but all employment and HR matters will be managed by MAAME, Inc.

Role: Doula

Role Summary: We are seeking compassionate and dedicated Community doulas/ Birth workers to join our Community Doula Program.This position involves providing comprehensive support and advocacy to patients throughout the perinatal period, including prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. As a doula, you will play a crucial role in improving maternal and infant health outcomes for our community. This is a full-time position of up to 35 hours per week, aligned with our wellness policy.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct client support: Provide compassionate, non-medical support to patients during prenatal visits, labor and birth, and the postpartum period. Offer emotional, physical, and informational support to promote a positive birth experience.
  • Resource connection: Connect clients to necessary resources, including healthcare services, social support, and community programs, to ensure comprehensive care and address any barriers they may face. Bi-weekly meetings and case studies: Participate in bi-weekly meetings with the doula team to discuss experiences, share knowledge, and engage in case studies for ongoing professional development. Centering pregnancy and group prenatal care: Facilitate and support the implementation of the Centering pregnancy model and group prenatal care, fostering a supportive and empowering environment for clients.
  • Client advocacy: Empower clients to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions about their healthcare. Support clients in navigating the healthcare system and ensure their preferences and birth plans are respected.
  • Documentation and record-keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including documentation of services provided, client progress, and any relevant information.
  • Collaborative and community care: Embrace and contribute to a community-based care model, working collaboratively with healthcare providers, community organizations, and fellow doulas to ensure comprehensive and culturally competent care for clients.
  • Wellness and self-care: Prioritize self-care and well-being, seek support when needed, and acknowledge triggers or challenging situations. Utilize available resources, such as mental health providers and healthcare professionals, to maintain personal wellness.
  • Labor Support: Provide physical support during labor and delivery, including assistance with breathing techniques and comfort measures. Physical stamina for long periods of standing and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Qualifications:

  • Doula trained/certified: Possess valid doula training or certification from a doula training agency, demonstrating the completion of appropriate training and knowledge in perinatal support.

Experience:

Previous experience as a doula, preferably working with diverse populations and in a hospital or community-based setting.

  • Cultural competence: Exhibit cultural competence and sensitivity to the unique experiences, beliefs, and values of families. Respect and honor cultural traditions and practices.
  • Effective communication: Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to establish rapport, actively listen, and provide information in a clear and compassionate manner.
  • Client-centered care: Embrace a client-centered approach, recognizing and respecting the autonomy and choices of clients while providing evidence-based information and support.
  • Teamwork and collaboration: Work collaboratively with a diverse team of healthcare professionals, community organizations, and fellow doulas to ensure comprehensive care and support for clients.
  • Commitment to professional growth: Display a commitment to ongoing professional development, attending trainings, workshops, and staying updated with current research and best practices in perinatal care.
  • Community care model: Be passionate about providing care from a community care model, recognizing the importance of holistic and culturally responsive support for families in our community.

Pay: $30.00 – $45.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
