In Durham County, Black infants are 3.5x more likely to die up to a year after birth compared to white infants. While 60% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, maternal mortality has steadily increased in the past 8 years. Just 4 years ago, Black women were 3x more likely than their white counterparts to succumb to life-threatening circumstances after birth. From then to now, those numbers have almost doubled. This may be due, in part, to the fact that over a quarter of all Black women birthing in NC do not receive prenatal care until their first trimester has already begun.
